Cenas maternais segundo Adam Buck - Mother-and-child scenes after Adam Buck

This week I brought for tea - with Terri and Martha's Tea Cup Tuesday and Sandi's Tea Time Tuesday - another set of English teaware.

They are typical of a certain production of the early 19th century (1800-1820) - bat-printed decorations, with scenes in the neoclassical style of the Regency period, with maternal figures which, by the type of clothing and hairstyles, recall the female characters of Jane Austen's novels, today made popular in films and serials.

These black and white scenes, bat printed on porcelain or on pearlware, followed Adam Buck's drawings, an Irish artist who gained notoriety in London in the late seventeen and early eighteen hundreds, whom I already mentioned in a post last September.

Besides the black and white scenes in the cup and saucer, the pieces are edged by pink lustre borders.

Here we aren't dealing with porcelain but with the so-called pearlware which Josiah Wedgwood developed and was then used in Wedgwood's and other English makers' production, in the early 19th century. None of the pieces is marked, but underneath one can notice the bluish glaze which  is typical of pearlware.

The plate which accompanies the tea cup and saucer features an underglaze  decoration of blue flowers which is overlapped by a pink lustre garland of foliage, all enclosed by lustre borders.

I know that with this plate, bearing this decoration, I will surprise a friend of mine who often comes to visit. I didn't notice it when I first bought the set, months ago in Coimbra, but I think it's the same decoration as a plate of his, larger than this one, we came to talk about and which intrigued us as to its origin. I have no doubts now that they are both English pink lustre items.

But back to Adam Buck's style drawings. These scenes of family intimacy, as well as allegories or classical figures, were in fashion in the decorative arts all over Europe and furniture inevitably reflected this taste.

LuisY of "Velharias" blog, who has already posted about this kind of wares, shared an interesting find he made in the collections of Museu Nacional de Arte Antiga (National Museum of Ancient Art) one of our outstanding museums in Lisbon: a table, probably portuguese-made, with a decorated top which copies a print inspired by Adam Buck: "The darling asleep" by Freeman.

Here we see a baby asleep at his mother's lap, but all these scenes show figures of women caring for their children - helping to drink,  dressing,  cuddling -  very suitable scenes for tea this week since in Portugal it is already next Sunday that we celebrate Mother's Day.  I do not know the reason for choosing this date, in other countries it  is on different days, and here it used to be  on the 8th of December. At that time, when I was a kid, they had me make pot holders, of  wool or of cotton yarn, to offer to my mother, who moreover celebrates her  birthday on that day. What happened was that more often than not it was herself that had to end the knitting or crocheting...

In the photos there are gifts I got on Mother's Day and which are my favourite: flowers, namely orchid flowers, the small potted one received in one of the last celebrations and curiously the one which thrives better in our home.
Fortunately, I can still celebrate the day, hopefully for some more years, with my mother... and not less important, with my father!

With a special affection for all mothers who are going through hard times...

  1. Dear Maria,
thats a very charming set. The decoration after Adam Buck is so sweet. You combined it wonderful with the pearl ware, which is also precious. Items from this time are so beautiful. For shure they have been treasures since they exist. But today, when only some has left over, they are much more precious to us. Dear Maria, I wish you and your parents a lot of more years, full of health and luck.
    Hugs and greetings, Johanna

    1. Thanks for your sweet comment and good wishes, dear Johanna.
These antique wares are true survivors as they started life and service about two hundred years ago. That makes them rare and so special to me.
      Have a great week.

    1. Hi Veronica,
The fact is it's not really important on which day you celebrate Mother's Day, as long as you celebrate, while you can...
I'm glad you enjoyed reading about these wares.
A lovely day/week to you, too.

  6. Que surpresa tão agradável Maria Andrade. Fiquei encantado!

  14. Hi Felicity
You're right about the catholic meaning of that date , 8th December, but in Portugal we no longer use it for Mother's Day.
I'm glad you enjoyed the post and the set.
Thanks for your good wishes for Mother's Day.
    Have a great week!
